Criminal Sentencing in Tribal Courts and Post-Sentencing Options – Webinar – June 25, 2025
The Tribal Law and Policy Institute (TLPI) along with our training and technical assistance partner – the Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI), presented a webinar titled: Criminal Sentencing in Tribal Courts and Post-Sentencing Options
About the Webinar:
Tribal courts are uniquely positioned to balance accountability, healing, and justice within their communities. This webinar will provide a comprehensive overview of sentencing frameworks available under Tribal law—both before and after the enactment of the Tribal Law and Order Act (TLOA). Participants will examine key concepts such as executed versus suspended sentences, sentence modifications, commutations, pardons, expungements, and other post-conviction options that honor Tribal values while addressing public safety and resource limitations. The session will also highlight innovative sentencing alternatives and address how sentencing flexibility can reduce over-incarceration and support rehabilitation, victim restoration, and community wellness.
